Imaginative Itineraries
The Sharks Tooth Stoop (2-Day
Fossil Forage)
Southern Maryland rocks! Calvert and Charles counties' beaches and rocky cliffs are renowned for some of the best fossil spotting anywhere, and you're about to find out why. Book your accommodations at Brictoria Cottage B&B (roughly midway between each county's best fossil shores). On the first day, visit Purse Park in Nanjemoy, (check the tide tables first; at high tide there is very little beach to comb). Dine at Capt. John's Crab House and Marina in Cobb Island, since by now you're in the mood for some serious seafood.
On day two, Calvert Cliffs State Park and Flag Ponds Nature Park (both in Lusby) offer fertile fossil-hunting beaches. You can take your treasures to Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons to identify them and learn more about the ancient creatures that roamed these waters. Dine at the Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill in Solomons, where you'll often find a "rockin" band on the weekend. (Warning: finding fossils may be addictive! If you discover you are developing the Southern Maryland "Sharks' Tooth Stoop," call your chiropractor immediately. In fact, invite him along…just in case!)
