Unplugged! The Ultimate Gadget-Free
Getaway
For this family-friendly adventure, ban anything that buzzes, beeps or rings and get back to basics. Reserve one of the family campsites at Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine (April through November). From this base camp, you're not far from Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Patuxent River Park (Jug Bay Natural Area), Clearwater Nature Center and Rosaryville State Park, all great spots to wean yourself off Wi-Fi for the day.
On day two, trek to Calvert Cliffs State Park in Lusby, where there's nothing but nature from the sand and shells underfoot to the towering cliffs overhead. (Pick up a picnic at Dream Weaver Cafe on the way.) Flag Ponds Nature Park in Lusby and the American Chestnut Land Trust in Port Republic offer great back-to-nature destinations. Explore Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary in Prince Frederick, then north to Kings Landing Park in Huntingtown for hiking, fishing or crabbing. If there's time, Canaan Farms, Inc. in Huntingtown offers horseback riding (call ahead). We bet you won't even miss tapping a keyboard. Instead of texting your buddies, take them along! (Your thumbs will thank you.)
