to Mock-apulco: A Pretend Trip to the Tropics
If you can't swing an expensive tropical vacation, here's a great "stay-cation" idea. Book a beach-side cabin at Herrington Harbour South. Dress the kids in grass skirts and flower leis, put hibiscus in their hair, then pose them among the coconut palms for the scrapbook photos. Gather up the beach gear and head into North Beach, where you can alternate shopping in spots like The Wheel Clothing Store and Artworks at 7th with sunbathing on the beach. Lunch at Sweet Sue's Bake Shop & Coffee Bar, then more shopping, swimming and sunbathing.
Time your dinner at Rod 'N' Reel Restaurant to take advantage of the spectacular sunset, then back to Herrington Harbour South, where Mango's Bar and Grill is just cranking up for the evening (order a mai tai with a pineapple garnish). End up in some beach chairs under the stars with the waves whispering nearby. With all the money you've saved, you can afford to leave the cabana boy a juicy tip.
